Since October 2023, more than 1000 healthcare workers have been killed in Gaza, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) —
a rate far exceeding other major conflicts:
- Syria (2011–present): Over 900 healthcare workers killed across 12+ years (Physicians for Human Rights).
- Ukraine (2014–present): Over 130 since 2022 (WHO).
Gaza’s death toll among medics and first responders is among the worst in modern conflict zones.
Notable incidents involving strikes on ambulances and medical teams:
- Mar 23, 2025 – Rafah: Israeli forces killed 15 rescue workers including Red Crescent medics, civil defense responders, and a UN staffer. Victims were reportedly shot at close range, some with bound hands. Ambulances were buried under sand by bulldozers. Israeli forces initially claimed militants were involved but later retracted after forensic evidence emerged. (Source: The Guardian)
- Jun 2025 – Central Gaza: A rescue team was killed by a second airstrike after saving a young girl from a burning house.
- May 2025 – Deir al-Balah: An airstrike killed at least 15 people, including medics and first responders, while they assisted bombing victims.
- Nov 3, 2023 – Al-Shifa Hospital: A convoy of ambulances was struck by Israeli missiles outside the hospital. Patients and medics were killed. Israel claimed Hamas use, but video evidence raised allegations of a cover-up.
- Dec 2023 – Nasser & Al-Quds Hospitals: WHO and OCHA documented repeated strikes rendering both hospitals largely non-functional.
- Early 2024 – Central & Southern Gaza: Dozens of paramedics were killed in direct strikes on marked ambulances while responding to attacks.
WHO confirmed over 100 attacks on Gaza’s health infrastructure by March 2024, calling it one of the most dangerous environments for medical personnel worldwide.
